Dr. Idia B. Thurston (she/her) is a licensed clinical psychologist and an associate professor of psychology and public health at Texas A & M University (TAMU). She is a core member of the Diversity Science Research Cluster at TAMU. Dr. Thurston directs the CHANGE (Challenging Health inequity in Adolescents and Nurturing Global Empowerment) lab, where she leads scholars to conduct health equity research. Her research program is framed by academic feminist and social justice lenses. Her body of work explores how intersectional identities of race, ethnicity, social class, gender, size, and sexuality influence health and well-being. She is a pediatric/adolescent health psychologist who has published over 60 peer reviewed articles on multilevel factors contributing to physical and mental health disparities. Dr. Thurston is driven to develop strengths-based, culturally-responsive assessments and interventions that reduce stigma, enhance well-being, and promote resilience among minoritized youth and families. Her work is developed via reciprocal community academic partnerships and guided by cultural humility and equity-centered scholarship. She strives to disseminate initiatives that promote health and wellness to stakeholders while influencing the next generation of scholars via holistic mentoring. Dr. Thurston is committed to a reimagining of psychological science, practice, training, and advocacy to achieve collective liberation.
