Nicole C. Nelson is Associate Professor of Science and Technology Studies at the University of Wisconsin Madison. She uses qualitative and mixed methods to study how scientists think about uncertainty and complexity in their research, with a focus on preclinical biomedical sciences. Her recent book, Model Behavior (University of Chicago Press, 2018) examines how animal behavior geneticists operationalize beliefs about complexity in their experimental designs and communicate these beliefs to the public. In 2018, she was awarded a fellowship from the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University for her work on reproducibility and rigor in preclinical research. She is a Collaborating Editor at the journal Social Studies of Science, serves on the editorial boards for New Genetics and Society and the Journal of the History of Biology, and has published widely in journals addressing issues at the intersection of science and society, such as PLOS ONE, Science and Public Policy, and Social Science and Medicine.
