What is metascience? Part 1: Methods, disciplines and purposes

Abstract

Metascience—also known as meta-research, research on research or the science of science—draws on a rich mix of disciplinary and methodological approaches to analyse, evaluate and experiment with research systems and cultures. The agenda for the Metascience 2021 meeting reflects the dynamism and diversity that now characterise these fields. This linked pair of sessions aims to revisit and shine fresh light on a fundamental question: what is metascience? Metascience is often defined by its methods.

Part 1 will explore the breadth of methodological, theoretical and disciplinary perspectives being creatively combined in metascience. How are these related, connected or distinct from other fields and modes of inquiry into the scientific enterprise, and discipline-specific work on research cultures and practices? What is metascience trying to achieve, and who is it for? Is there scope to coalesce around agreed goals and purposes?
