Empowering early career researchers to improve science

Abstract

This panel will explore the role of early career researchers (ECRs) in promoting systemic change in research culture and practice. To do so, we will bring together panelists with experience in founding and running successful initiatives to discuss “lessons learned”, and practical advice for both ECRs and stakeholders at various levels (institutions, funders, publishers, and peer networks). These topics, explored in a virtual unconference last year (Kent et al., 2021, https://osf.io/p5evw/), will include discussion of obstacles faced by ECRs in running these initiatives, and specific actions that different stakeholders can take to support them.

The panel will also explore issues pertinent to ECR initiatives based in countries with limited research funding, as well as equity, diversity and inclusion in science improvement activities.

The goal of the discussion will be to catalyze reform efforts by inspiring and advising ECRs on how best to stimulate change, as well as how important stakeholders can be effective allies to ECRs leading these efforts.
